When you arrive at Canadian Customs, you are required to declare all of your purchases to the Customs Inspector. You are required to pay duty on all purchases with the exeption of Duty Free items. Depending on the length of stay in the US you might also qualify for personal exemptions.
As of January 1, 1998 all goods made in the US are duty free.

Personal Exemptions

  • less than 24 hours - None
  • less than 48 hours - Puchases must not exceed 50.00 each to qualify for the 50.00 exemption. No tobacco or alcohol.
  • less than 7 days - You can claim up to 200.00 worth of goods including tobacco and alcohol products.
  • over 7 days - You can claim up to 750.00 worth of goods including tobacco and alcohol products.

    Tobacco and Alcohol (allowed when over 48 hours)

  • 1.5 litres of wine or 1.14 litres of alcohol or 24 12oz or 355ml cans of bottles of beer.
  • 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, 200 grams of tobacco or 200 tobacco sticks.
